West Des Moines is a rapidly-growing community located just west of the City of Des Moines. Ranking 94th in Money Magazine’s list of the “100 Best Places to Live and Launch,” the city benefits from the presence of the Raccoon River and Walnut Creek, as well as many other natural areas in the Des Moines region. The goal of the West Des Moines Bicycle Master Plan is to provide an assessment of West Des Moines’ existing bicycling and trail policies and environment in order to develop a comprehensive list of projects and strategies for system-wide improvements. Strategies to enhance the city’s non-motorized environment include filling gaps in the local and regional trails, identifying innovative solutions for integrating bikeways into the existing street system, including bicycling in on-going transportation planning, design and maintenance activities, and improving education, encouragement and enforcement programs.
