Way to Go! is a three-year program to reduce drive-alone trips in Marin County and increase bicycling, walking, carpooling, and transit use. The program reached Sausalito in 2008, Larkspur and Novato in 2009, and San Rafael in 2010.
The Way to Go! program invites residents of the target areas to order a customized information packet containing an event calendar, a walking and bicycling map, a bicycling guide, and numerous transit maps and schedules. Customized packets are assembled and delivered to residents at their home, along with an incentive gift of their choice.
In addition to the customized information packet, Way to Go! hosted numerous community activities such as group walks, guided bicycle rides, and classes and workshops. Way to Go! staff appeared at community events and visited community groups to answer questions about walking, bicycling, and transit use.
Over the three year program, more than 14,000 Marin residents were invited to participate by ordering a customized travel resources packet and/or participating in one of the many events (including guided walks, rides, and classes). Over 15% of target area residents participated in the program, and participants reported that the program motivated them to walk, bicycle, and take transit more often.
Way to Go! was a major part of WalkBikeMarin (Marin County’s implementation of the Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program), and was a cooperative effort between Marin County, the Cities of Sausalito, Novato, Larkspur, and San Rafael, Golden Gate Transit, Marin Transit, and numerous other community partners.
