Tonquin Trail Feasibility Study (OR)
Alta Planning + Design conducted a feasibility study for the Tonquin Trail, located between the Tualatin River and the Willamette River, south of Portland, Oregon. The study area spans a distance of approximately 16 miles and moves through the communities of Tualatin, Sherwood, and Wilsonville, capitalizing and weaving together a network of existing open space, trails, planned developments, and neighborhood and community parks. A key goal of the feasibility study was to explore trail alignment options that made connections to the unique Tonquin Geologic Area and existing Kolk Pond sites in the region, thereby providing for educational opportunities. The project required consensus-building with multiple agencies, including the City of Wilsonville, Tualatin, Sherwood, Tigard, Washington County, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Three Rivers Land Conservancy, Tualatin River Keepers, and Metro. In addition, stakeholder interviews were conducted with numerous agencies to obtain conceptual approval on shared use of existing right-of-ways, including Portland General Electric, Portland and Western Railroad, Bonneville Power Administration, and the Washington County Transportation Department. As part of this project, Alta produced: a narrative report of the existing conditions, descriptions and evaluations of potential alignments, and project sheets for each of the alignments.
