Neighbors on the Go! (Forum/Chapel Hill) Columbia, MO
This pilot program is based on the award-winning SmartTrips program from Portland, OR. The Neighbors on the Go program has delivered customized bicycling and walking materials to over 600 households in Columbia, MO and provided engaging events such as women's fitness rides, Friday errand walks, a Mother's Day family bike ride, and a bird walk with the Audubon Society director. An intensive communication strategy accompanies the materials and events, lowering the barriers to walking and bicycling and providing participants with both information and inspiration to drive less and walk and bike more. After the first month of the program, more than 20% of target area residents had participated in the program, and more participation is expected. The program is not yet complete, but similar projects have resulted in a 9-13% reduction in drive-alone trips.
