This three-year individualized marketing program is a key part of WalkBikeMarin (Marin County's implementation of the Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program). The program uses proven methods to increase walking, bicycling, and transit use through a three-pronged approach:
- Offering customized information packets to every resident;
- Leading twice-weekly group walks, bicycle rides, and classes; and
- Outreach at community events.
For the first year of the program, all 8000 residents of the town of Sausalito (CA) were invited to participate by ordering a customized travel resources packet (844 packets were delivered to residents’ homes by bicycle) and/or participating in one of 23 different events (including guided walks, rides, and classes). Over 15% of residents participated in the program, and participants reported that the program motivated them to walk, bicycle and take transit more often.
The program is a cooperative effort by Marin County, the City of Sausalito, Golden Gate Transit, Marin Transit, the Chamber of Commerce, and numerous other community partners. This three-year program will reduce drive-alone trips in the cities of Sausalito, San Rafael, Greenbrae/Larkspur, and Novato.
