Luke Lamon, Outreach Specialist

Weekly bike rides were my family's way of spending time together as I grew up, and considering the fact that there were 4 kids and two working parents, it wasn't always the  easiest event to orchestrate. In retrospect, the legacy of that weekly ritual that I am most thankful for is a simple one: it made riding a bike to get from one place to another a natural and logical choice. As I grew older, and my transportation options expanded, my bike always remained the most reliable of those options, and it is the only method of travel that actually improves my mood. While there are so many reasons that I can come up with to try and encourage others to choose a bike to get where they need to go, the most convincing is still the physical and mental gratification of using self-generated energy to move about. Alta's work is powerful because helps to foster that same lifelong association that I've found with cycling, and that's why I'm glad to be here.

Luke Lamon has spent the majority of his educational and professional career exploring effective ways to encourage people to make conscious transportation choices. With the majority of his work the Seattle-area, Luke has a thorough understanding of the movement of both people and goods through the Puget Sound region. As someone who has worked with the non-profit, academic, and industrial communities he brings an understanding and pragmatism to transportation-related projects in which he is tasked with encouraging others to choose travel modes that will make a positive impact on the environment.

Recent Projects

  • Juanita In Motion Program, Kirkland, WA
Luke was the public face of the Juanita In Motion program, which reached 4000 households in Kirkland, WA with a community dialogue approach to reducing drive-alone trips. During the 16-week program, Juanita-area residents reduced drive-alone trips by nearly 145,000 miles, saved more than 7,000 gallons of gas, and prevented 70 tons of carbon emissions from being released into the air. Luke handled fulfillment of incentives, reached the public through booths and events, solicited business sponsors, and publicized the program through outreach to community blogs and organizations.
  • Undriving.org Intern/Project Coordinator, Seattle area, WA
Undriving is a non-profit organization that encourages people to make non-motorized transportation choices for as many of their daily trips as possible. As a dedicated part-time intern, and later as a Project Coordinator, Luke managed the production and online fulfillment of “Undriver License” orders. In addition, Luke coordinated all off-site events such as a week-long partnership with the Earth Service Corps at Ballard High School to celebrate Bike to School Week, as well as coordinating Undriving’s presence at the Mayor’s Annual Transportation Summit.
  • Outreach Coordinator, Duwamish TMA, Seattle, WA
The DTMA occupies a unique transportation landscape, serving a large number of industrial and manufacturing businesses.  In his capacity as Outreach Coordinator, Luke works with industrial businesses to raise their understanding of safe and predictable non-motorized commute networks within the industrial area, for use by both employees and customers. He is also working with those businesses to establish new transportation routes and routines in light of the impending closure of the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
  • Bicycle Commuter Act Outreach Campaign, Seattle, WA
Luke designed an outreach campaign to encourage businesses to take advantage of the Federal Bicycle Commuter Act, an underutilized piece of legislation signed into law in early 2009. He also led a brown-bag information session for downtown bike commuters at the Commute Seattle offices, and has supplied the University of Washington’s Transportation Services Director with information on the Act so that they may advocate for further passage of a related Bill.
