Growing up on the streets of Brooklyn, NY from birth to the age of ten, I took for granted the ability to walk or bike wherever I wanted to go, whether it was the candy store for baseball cards or to the library for a good book or walking home from school in the fourth grade. Walking and biking was a way of life, although I didn’t know it.
After moving at the age of 10 to a suburb of Baltimore, MD, it became painfully apparent how much I took the non-motorized alternatives available in Brooklyn for granted. Now I was in a place where it was necessary to have a car to go to the store, to the park, to school, to anywhere. It was something I missed the entire 20 years I lived there.
Moving to Portland has opened my eyes to the possibilities of alternative modes of transportation and gives me hope and joy at the thought of moving into the city and walking or biking the streets once again, to the store, to the library, and to work.
I am excited to be a part of Alta and the work being done here.
