As the City of Greenville, SC grows in size and numbers, a comprehensive, balanced, and efficient transportation network has become increasingly important. Though the city has won numerous awards and has secured the coveted role as host to the annual U.S.A. Cycling national championships, Greenville is not stopping there. After earning the national designation as a Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community in 2009, the city stated its intent to earn Silver-level status and ultimately, reach Platinum. With that goal in mind, the city began the process of developing a comprehensive Bicycle Master Plan in 2010.
The Greenville Bicycle Master Plan serves as a guide for City staff, residents, community leaders, and elected officials, as they work to create a balanced transportation network, and to respond to demand for recreational activities. The plan lays the groundwork for future efforts by the city to make Greenville even more bike friendly.
The project includes a city-wide evaluation of the existing network of roads and on-street bike facilities, Recommendations for a comprehensive bike route signing system and a connected, city-wide network of bike facilities; Current best practices for making roadways and trails safe and convenient for bicyclists; A review of the institutional structure that is contributing to the Bicycle Friendly Community campaign with recommendations for improvement; Thorough analysis of bicyclists' needs and existing demand in Greenville based on bicycle ridership estimates, collision data, and other facto
rs; A how-to guide and training for conducting "bike counts" annually; A priority matrix for determining which projects to implement in the short-, medium-, and long-term; Engineering specifications for carefully-selected, high-priority projects; A detailed action plan and step-by-step guide to take Greenville to the next level of Bicycle Friendly Community status; and an implementation plan to assist Greenville as it moves forward with each element of the master plan.
