The Great Rivers Greenway District serves St. Louis and surrounding counties as a regional open space, trails, and greenway provider. In 2004, the Board of Great Rivers Greenway (GRG) approved its first regional plan titled the "Citizen-Driven Regional Plan" which endorsed the creation of the "River Ring" - a regional, interconnected system of greenways, parks, and trails throughout GRG's 1,216 sq. mile service area. The Plan stressed the importance of three principles that can serve as a measure of a healthy region: 1.) Economic Development, 2.) Social Capital and 3.) Environmental stewardship. Since 2004, GRG has initiated work in 14 greenway corridors and has completed over 170 miles of on-street and off-road trails and paths. Alta staff led the District's original master plan and served as subconsultants to HOK on the update. Alta's role includes best practices research and case studies for greenway system planning, design, and management.
