Grand Junction Corridor RWT Feasibility Study, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Alta conducted a feasibility study for constructing a bicycle/pedestrian path along the Grand Junction Railroad in a complex urban location. The trail would be approximately two miles long and would connect with existing bike paths along the Charles River in Boston and Cambridge, and to another proposed rail-with-trail in Somerville. Limited freight service on the Grand Junction rail line is operated by CSX. Half of the corridor is owned by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which uses the corridor for service access to campus buildings. The feasibility study will take into account possible transit use of the corridor including bus rapid transit and light rail. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is considering part of the Grand Junction corridor for the Urban Ring, a transit way that would connect locations within the Boston area’s urban core.
