Dubai (UAE) Bicycle Master Plan
Alta led a major bikeway master plan for Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The plan included a multinational team of experts from Great Britain, The Netherlands, and Alta's offices in Dubai and the United States. Dubai is a rapidly growing tourist and commercial center, expected to grow from 1.5 million to 5 million residents by 2020. Alta was tasked with developing bicycle facilities to serve workers and visitors, along with a support network for the Metro transit system. Alta developed a comprehensive demand model that identified the existing and potential number of bicyclists and mode share data that previously did not exist. Alta team members completed the planning and preliminary design of a 500 km system within six months that included innovative features such as a fabric-covered bikeway, new grade-separated intersections, a floating bikeway, an indoor bicycle BMX/velodrome, a car-free area in the older part of the city, and many other features.
