Coastal Rail Trail, San Diego County, California

Alta Principal Michael Jones provided the planning and preliminary design expertise on the 40-mile Coastal Rail Trail project, extending from San Diego through Del Mar, Solana Beach, and Carlsbad to Oceanside in North San Diego County. The rail trail will be located directly adjacent to the active Santa Fe mainline, now operated by the North County Transit District (NCTD) and including over 30 daily commuter passenger trains, plus freight trains. The trail will serve both commuters and recreational traffic with destinations such as new commuter train stations, local employers and schools, and the beaches and parks. Major issues being addressed include grade crossings, safety, access, signing, cost, operations, and maintenance.
