City of Berkeley (CA) Pedestrian Master Plan
The City of Berkeley retained Alta to produce a Pedestrian Master Plan that will support and enhance the already high levels of walking within the city. The City is characterized by a varied urban form that encompasses both an urban city center, residential areas with neighborhood commercial and public nodes, industrial with a rapidly reinvented post-industrial artisan and office sector, and a major waterfront that is cordoned off by Interstate 80. The challenge of this project was producing recommendations that accurately target areas of need. Areas where there are already high levels of walking can be attributed to a pre-existing policy of traffic calming and pedestrian amenities, while areas lacking walking may be an indicator of insufficient infrastructure rather than lack of demand.
