Under ODOT, Alta collaborated with CH2M Hill and Angelo Planning, to develop bicycle and downtown plans for the town of Burns in Eastern Oregon. Burns is largely defined by Highway 395 and improvements were sought that would balance the needs of through traffic with bicycle and pedestrian considerations. Downtown recommendations included: curb extensions, visible crosswalks, accessible ramps, a way-finding system and site furnishings reflective of Burns’ rural identity. Project team members will assist with the Special Transportation Area (STA) adoption process at the end of this summer.
Working in tandem with the downtown improvements, the bicycle plan seeks to safely connect major destinations through a system of bicycle boulevards and street crossing improvements. Bike use is prevalent though out the city of Burns and an organized system will serve both local riders as well as cyclists touring through scenic Harney County.
